The Bachelor of Design Innovation (BDI) will prepare you to work as a designer in an exciting variety of design-based professions. Find out about the areas of design you can major in for your undergraduate degree or study at postgraduate level.
Get the practical skills to work in visual effects (VFX), game design, exhibition design, and multimedia design. Learn about the computer graphics techniques used in today’s modern film industry—including motion graphics and digital animation.
You’ll produce a professional portfolio around your chosen area of study. You’ll also work in a team to produce a time-based short narrative work—like a game or animated short film—with the guidance of industry mentors.
The course is taught at the University’s Miramar Creative Centre, where you’ll be using the latest industry-standard technology and gaining first-hand experience in the software, hardware, and professional practices common to the leading creative tech industries. Work with industry professionals while accessing the most up-to-date academic research in the field.

VFX is an area where both creativity and technology come together to solve problems and create wonder. Through my Master’s study, I was given opportunities to learn about many areas of the VFX pipeline and filmmaking process. I was encouraged to explore my own interests in this field, such as virtual production, motion capture, and real-time rendering.

Design Technology is only available at postgraduate level. You can study it in the Master of Design Technology programme, which is taught through the Wellington ICT Graduate School.
