Course content

This course will give students a basic first knowledge of areas of the Latin language, with a focus on learning grammar and vocabulary, and reading and understanding the language. Exercises will include translation from Latin into English and sometimes from English into Latin, grammar and vocabulary exercises. After completing this class you should be able to read easy passages of Latin in the textbook and know about a third of basic Latin grammar and syntax as well as a substantial range of vocabulary.

Course learning objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of basic Latin vocabulary, morphology and syntax;

  2. read and translate passages of simple Latin;

  3. translate simple English sentences into Latin;

  4. demonstrate comprehension of basic linguistic concepts of Latin.

Class representative

The class representative provides a useful way to communicate feedback to the teaching staff during the course. They also work with the VUWSA Education Office on any academic issues that arise in their course. Reps are elected by students by the third week of classes every trimester. Being a rep requires a weekly commitment.
