“I always enjoy coming along to alumni events as they are a great way to reconnect with people beyond your immediate circle of friends,” says James, who is director of business operations—International Markets at Paypal.
“Alumni events are an excellent way to make new friends and connections because everyone can already relate to the shared experiences of studying at Victoria University of Wellington and living in Wellington.”
James went to London for his OE, and has now been there nearly a decade, saying, “London continues to offer incredible opportunities for entertainment, travel, and career that very few places could rival.”
He is looking forward to filling the new role of regional London alumni ambassador. “I definitely didn’t need to be asked twice. I see the role as an opportunity to increase the sense of community amongst alumni in London. I’m looking forward to organising more frequent events to create more opportunities for alumni to connect, and I’ll happily listen to any ideas for activities and events we could hold.”
While at the University from 2002–2006, Mr Clark completed a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration in Economics and Finance. He was a tutor in money and banking while here, was a Law Students’ Society Exec, and was also involved in Debating, as President of the Debating Society, and secretary of the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Society. He later completed a Master of Business Administration at London Business School.
James’ job at Paypal is to make everyone in the sales organisation look good. “I find ways to help the sales team hit their targets; to provide insights into our performance; and to connect people across silos in the organisation.”
But his life in London doesn’t prevent him from missing New Zealand occasionally. He misses family and friends, and the ease of access to the great outdoors. “I loved tramping in the Tararuas and using the Department of Conservation huts throughout New Zealand. I also appreciate the lack of bureaucracy: every interaction with a large company in the UK seems to be a battle, but in New Zealand there is usually someone who can help.”
His advice to fellow alumni in London is simple: “Reach out to other Victoria University of Wellington alumni and other Kiwis you know in London. They’ll help you to find your feet when you land– whether it’s finding a job, a flat, or simply where to get a good cup of coffee.”
James is looking forward to hosting his first event as Regional Ambassador on 19 March. Register here.
