Funding Opportunities for MAI Members

MAI members can apply for a range of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga (NPM) funding once they are enrolled for a PhD. Please note that you must meet certain criteria before you can make an application. MAI ki Pōneke also has a small grant for members for research related conferences or hui, for more information contact us. Other information regarding Postgraduate scholarships can be found at the bottom of this page.

  2. Current progress, projected completion date
  3. Financial need
  4. Contribution of the research to the body of knowledge that is concerned with Māori or Indigenous development

Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga (NPM) Grants

Doctoral Scholarships

NPM offers several doctoral scholarships, each to the value of $20,000 per year, to PhD-enrolled MAI members. The scholarship may be awarded in full to a single applicant, or it may be divided between applicants.

Summer Research Internships

Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga offers several internships each year. Research interns are paid up to $5000 to conduct a short research project over the summer trimester under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. You can find more information on the Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga website.

Doctoral Bridging Grants

Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga provides a number of Doctoral Bridging Grants to support Māori scholars from New Zealand tertiary institutions during the following stages of transition:

  1. doctoral candidates who have submitted a thesis for examination; and
  2. scholars who have successfully completed the requirements for a doctoral degree.

The purpose of the grant programme is to provide some financial assistance to candidates who are not in receipt of any other significant income during these stages of career transition, so that they can complete the preparation of research publications, engage in knowledge transfer relating to their research and make significant progress in further career preparation.

Knowledge Transfer and Research Training Fund

Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga provides funding for various research-related activities as follows:

  • Symposia and Research Collaborations: This includes funding of workshops, symposia and other small meetings that will assist in developing the research synergies and projects that fit with the approaches and research themes of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga.
  • Conference Support: This includes limited funding for conference travel and expenses are available for researchers and Māori postgraduate students who have an abstract accepted to attend a conference. It also includes funding to assist in the organisation of a research conference. The conference will focus on a topic that fits with the approaches and research themes of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga.
  • Knowledge Transfer to Māori Communities: This includes funding events that will facilitate knowledge transfer of completed research to Māori communities, groups, iwi and other organisations.

Research Fund

Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga offers funding for various research projects which meet standards of research excellence and address Māori research needs in the following areas:

  • Sustainable and healthy communities
  • Social and educational transformation
  • New frontiers of knowledge

National Doctoral Conferences

Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga runs an annual conference for doctoral students where research can be presented in a supportive, professional environment. This year the Doctoral conference is being hosted by Otago University more information will be available soon.
