Discover your individual voice and develop your imaginative capacity within a lively community of writers. Hone your craft in small-group writing workshops led by high-calibre teaching staff at the International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML).

The IIML is Aotearoa New Zealand’s most prestigious creative writing programme, offering a Masters in Creative Writing, a PhD in Creative Writing and a wide range of undergraduate courses that can contribute to an undergraduate degree or be taken independently.

Our teaching staff are all practising writers with strong publishing profiles. Many of our graduates have gone on to become leading authors and win major national and international awards. Read about graduates' MA experience in their own words.

After you graduate

Our graduates are now among Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading contemporary writers and have a growing international presence. They are active across a wide range of genres, including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, theatre, television and film. They also hold key university teaching roles both nationally and overseas.

A degree in Creative Writing can open unexpected doors. You might find work in publishing, editing, journalism and in writing roles in a range of organisations, from museums to the public service to the corporate world. If you're a Scriptwriting student, the connections you make during industry placement and collaborations will extend your professional networks.

You may also choose to continue your studies and apply to join our PhD programme.

Community

Postgraduate study at Victoria University of Wellington will help you build valuable relationships and networks with peers, university staff and future colleagues.

You'll have opportunities to attend events, workshops and social functions. Make use of private writing rooms and a dedicated postgraduate library specialising in writing from Aotearoa New Zealandand and local and international journals. As a Masters student, your work will be showcased in a public reading event late in the year.

The Postgraduate Students' Association can give you information on study at the University and provides a voice for you on campus.

Returning to study

Many students return to university for postgraduate study after several years away. If it's been a while since you've studied, our liaison officers can help you get back into university life.

Live and study in Aotearoa New Zealand's creative, compact and vibrant capital—home to some of the country's best writers. Immerse yourself in Wellington's dynamic literary culture—watch a play at BATS or attend a book launch at Unity or a poetry night at the Fringe Bar. The IIML's close relationships with Te Herenga Waka University Press and the literary community also provide opportunities to connect with the wider writing world through talks, book launches and other events.

Scholarships

The IIML offers a number of scholarships and prizes based on your level of study.

You can apply for the Wellington Master's by Thesis Scholarship if you're doing a full-time research-focused Master's.

If you're doing a PhD you can apply for the Wellington Doctoral Scholarship.

You can also look for scholarships based on your level of study, subject area and background.
