I particularly enjoyed the papers where I got to do case studies on real businesses and real problems.

Practical experience

When I applied to study at Victoria University of Wellington I hadn't given any thought to what I might be doing after university. Throughout my time at the University I gained a lot of practical exposure to the diverse range of work options available.

I particularly enjoyed the papers where I got to do case studies on real businesses and real problems. I graduated able to make a strong start in the workforce—I could think beyond a textbook and apply my knowledge to real-life examples.

Variety in learning

The thing I enjoyed most about my study at university is the variety of topics covered. Lecturers work really hard to keep the content relevant and engaging. I was able to pursue the research topics I was interested in, and grow my understanding of issues I was passionate about.

I was also supported to turn my Honours degree into a Master's while I was working. This was awesome as it enabled me to choose relevant research topics that I could link to my current work.

Continuous benefits

Since leaving the University I've worked in several organisations across the public sector including Ministry of Education, State Services Commission, Ministry of Justice, and most recently, the Department of Conservation.

I have been able to put the knowledge I gained into practice in interesting organisations, and keep learning.

The natural choice

When considering universities I chose Victoria University of Wellington because Wellington was a really appealing city to me and I thought, what better place to live and study management?

Studying and living in Wellington is great because you get to experience living and studying in the cultural capital while also being able to travel a short distance to be surrounded by native birds in the middle of a forest.

Real-world advantage

Studying MCom is great because I have really approachable and likeable lecturers who understand the importance of balancing theory with real-world application.

I wanted to develop my practical and theoretical skills to deepen my understanding of a topic that I love. I also wanted to gain confidence in a competitive graduate market and differentiate myself and my abilities.

I’ve had amazing opportunities at the University to meet awesome like-minded classmates and build great relationships with lecturers. I feel very supported and have been given a lot of freedom to focus on topics that interest me the most, which makes my qualification unique.
