Master of User Experience Design – MUXD

What you’ll study
The MUXD begins each year in Trimester 1. The MUXD has two pathways—a capstone project or your own independent research.
Capstone pathway
Capstone pathway students typically complete the MUXD in one year of full-time study spread over three trimesters—March to June, July to October, and November to February in the following year.Schedule by trimester:
- UXDN 404 and UXDN 406 in Trimester 1
- UXDN 416 and UXDN 423 in Trimester 2
- UXDN 504 In Trimester 3.
Independent research pathway
Students who choose the research portfolio pathway submit their final research in either March or June in the following year.Schedule by trimester:
- UXDN 404 and UXDN406 In Trimester 1
- either UXDN 416 or UXDN 423 in Trimester 2. Students also begin their research portfolio—UXDN 597
- continue UXDN 597 in Trimester 3.
Trimester 1 (March to June)
Tukanga ā-Hoahoa Wheako ā-Kaiwhakamahi—User Experience Design Process (UXDN 404)
Students develop core UX design skills such as:- problem framing
- qualitative research and analysis
- visual communication skills
- accessibility requirements and skills
- interaction design principles
- design concepting
- making low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes.
He Māramatanga—UX Design Context in Aotearoa (UXDN 406)
Students explore and develop skills in:- Mātauranga Māori in the UX design
- how to engage with Māori concepts in culturally sound ways
- important socio-cultural contexts for UX Designers, such as design ethics and values, design for sustainability, and design in the public sector.
Trimester 2 (July to October)
Tukanga ā-Hoahoa Wheako ā-Kaiwhakamahi Whatutoto—Advanced User Experience Design Process (UXDN 416)
Students add to your core UX design skills and knowledge including:- flexible and collaborative processes
- UX writing and content design
- advanced prototyping and research and data techniques
- UX design and cognition
- service design
- social and emotional design.
Hoahoa ā-Huataonga Matihiko—Digital Product Design (UXDN 423)
You’ll develop skills in current design methods for software, complex websites and apps, focusing on:- complex interaction design
- design systems
- information architecture
- information design
- design’s relationship with other processes such as Agile and Lean.
Kohinga Rangahau Hoahoa ā-Wheako Whaiaro—UX Design Research Portfolio (UXDN 597)
You’ll begin your research project focusing on:- developing your project proposal
- primary and secondary research
- developing and sharing concepts, and prototypes.
Trimester 3 (November to February)
Whakatinana ā-Hoahoa Wheako ā-Kaiwhakamaha—Experience Design Capstone (UXDN504)
The capstone includes:- designing your own process for your project
- conducting primary and secondary research
- developing detailed concepts to address project priorities
- delivering final reports, and design outcomes
- developing case studies for your design portfolio
Kohinga Rangahau Hoahoa ā-Wheako Whaiaro—UX Design Research Portfolio (UXDN 597)
You’ll continue your research project focusing on:- developing and sharing concepts and prototypes
- additional research as required
- developing final designs
- presenting your project in a final detailed report and with design artefacts.
