Degree requirements

For this degree you'll need to:

  • Complete 480 points, of which at least 120 points must come from courses 400 level or above from the BE(Hons) schedule

  • Complete the Part 1 requirements, which include:

    • The required Part 1 courses for at least one major

  • Complete the Part 2 requirements, which include:

    • Four professional practice courses:

  • Obtain at least a B average across the courses meeting the Part 1 requirements

  • After the second year of study, complete at least 800 hours of employment or work experience in a position approved by the associate dean and produce evidence of its completion to the satisfaction of the associate dean

  • Complete the requirements for one major subject

Important information

The BE(Hons) degree is made up of several parts that you'll need to complete:

Part 1

This consists of six or seven 100-level courses which provide the necessary foundations for the BE(Hons). Make sure you take the right courses for your chosen major (selected from the drop down list below). While many courses are shared with other majors some are different, so read carefully. If you're unsure about which major you like, speak to staff in the School of Engineering and Computer Science about selecting courses that keep your options open. To successfully complete Part 1 of the BE(Hons), you'll need to pass all required Part 1 courses with at least a B average. If you have a lower average you'll be able to transfer your courses to a BSc. You may begin to take your Part 2 courses prior to completing Part 1 as long as you have passed any specific course prerequisites.

Part 2

This is the core component of the BE(Hons) and is made up of various 200-, 300- and 400-level courses. While some courses are common to all majors, like the professional practice and work experience, most are specific to the major you wish to study (see drop down list below). Part 2 comprises:

  • Professional Practice consists of a set of courses (ENGR 301, 302, 401 and 489) required for all majors which develop a professional approach to engineering. You must have successfully completed Part 1 (with at least a B average) in order to enrol in any of these courses.
  • Work experience is required for all majors and includes 800 hours of approved work experience in an engineering environment. This will help you prepare to apply for and work in appropriate employment. The work experience normally occurs in the summers following your second and third years of study. Full details of the BE(Hons) work experience programme are on the School website.
  • Major courses: There are various courses required for your chosen major that are not covered by Part 1. Some of these courses are specified exactly or you can select from a defined range of courses.

Additional elective courses are required in order to bring the total number of points to 480. These may be selected from any courses offered by the University. Make sure you check what the prerequisites are for all 200-, 300- and 400-level courses you're planning to do in your degree. Ensure your choices will cover those requirements.

Courses at 300 and 400 level may only be counted towards one major or minor.
