Academic inclusion assistants and electronic live transcribers

The role of an academic inclusion assistant is to provide tailored, comprehensive notes for students who are unable to accurately take any notes for themselves.

Electronic live transcriber’s provide live access and an electronic record of the information spoken in a lecture. The service provides close to verbatim coverage and is particularly useful for Deaf students.

Academic inclusion assistants and electronic live transcribers work best when they operate in collaboration with the relevant lecturers and/or tutors. As an academic staff member, you can help by providing them with:

• copies of any handouts, PowerPoints, lecture notes prior to or at the beginning of class in electronic form
• clarification on class content. As they are not students in the class, at times academic inclusion assistants  and electronic live transcribers may need to clarify points with you to ensure their notes are accurate. This is normally done at the end of the session.

Academic inclusion assistants and electronic live transcribers provide an impartial service. Their role is to assist the student to access the information they need to fully participate in your course. They should not be expected to participate in the course.
