Audio-Visual Space / Whaitua Ataata-Rongo

Students will investigate processes and strategies involved in the production of time-based media, including audio recording, editing and manipulation techniques. Revolving around the topic of audio-visual space, course projects will allow students to explore the psychology of perception and concepts of spatiality within audio and video design.

Course content

In this course, students will learn how to produce media that creatively engages with the realm of sound, video and space. By developing an understanding of sonic environments, students will develop autonomous audiovisual projects.
 
Lectures provide the conceptual framework for the course and will include presentations, demonstrations and provocations. Studio time will be used for production, research, experiments and reflection. In practical tutorials, students will learn how to record and edit high-quality sound and image, how to use audio and video editing software for post-production and how to deliver audiovisual material at industry standard.
 
MDDN314 is an on-campus only course and is not available for distance study. This means all class sessions will be delivered in person at our Te Aro Campus.

Course learning objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:

  1. Develop and execute effective audio-visual design and production strategies.

  2. Communicate design concepts orally, visually and in writing with clarity and insight.

  3. Use audio-visual precedents to add rigour to creative practice.

  4. Use a variety of audio-visual software and hardware to resolve problems and implement design solutions.

Class representative

The class representative provides a useful way to communicate feedback to the teaching staff during the course. They also work with the VUWSA Education Office on any academic issues that arise in their course. Reps are elected by students by the third week of classes every trimester. Being a rep requires a weekly commitment.
