Philosophy of Art

We’re surrounded by art – not just in art galleries, but in the movies and TV shows that we watch, the videogames we play, the photos we post, and the bands we listen to. Why do we love art so much? In this course we’ll look at the ways that art influences our thinking: how it gives us pleasure and wisdom, shapes our judgements, and challenges our political views. You’ll learn how to think critically about the visual culture that pervades our everyday world. This course is designed for all students and does not assume any background in philosophy or in art.

Course learning objectives

Students who pass this course will be able to:

  1. explain some of the current debates in the field of the philosophy of art;

  2. evaluate a variety of arguments about philosophy of art using established methods of formal or informal logic;

  3. define clearly and precisely key concepts in philosophy of art

  4. evaluate various art-related artifacts, situations or outcomes and use this information to inform decision making.

  5. practice and improve your critical writing and conversation skills.

Class representative

The class representative provides a useful way to communicate feedback to the teaching staff during the course. They also work with the VUWSA Education Office on any academic issues that arise in their course. Reps are elected by students by the third week of classes every trimester. Being a rep requires a weekly commitment.
