German Language 2B

This course is designed to provide practice of speaking, reading and listening to authentic German texts at the intermediate level of B1 in the Common European Reference Framework for Language Learning, as well as consolidation of intermediate German grammar. We'll also delve into German, Austrian and Swiss culture, learning words and expressions, and examining cultural and societal norms that will help you participate in everyday conversations and demonstrate cultural sensitivity in your interactions with native speakers of German.

Course content

CRN 31102 is for students who will be coming to campus.

Course learning objectives

Students who pass this course will be able to:

  1.  engage critically with authentic and adapted texts and audio-visual material on topical issues;

  2. demonstrate versatility of communication in different contexts;

  3. employ appropriate vocabulary on specific topics pertaining to everyday life;

  4. have an overview of the main German grammatical structures;

  5. demonstrate and articulate knowledge of aspects of culture and society in German-speaking countries.

Academic requirements

GERM 202 requires prior knowledge of German: usually a pass in GERM 201 or a B1.1 certificate from an accredited language school such as the Goethe-Institut.

Class representative

The class representative provides a useful way to communicate feedback to the teaching staff during the course. They also work with the VUWSA Education Office on any academic issues that arise in their course. Reps are elected by students by the third week of classes every trimester. Being a rep requires a weekly commitment.
