Fighting with China

Abstract

This talk asks what happens when countries fall out with Beijing. It explores a number of case studies from Asia, Europe and Oceania and discusses China's attitude to using sanctions to punish and create pressure on recalcitrant countries. It identifies what issues China cares most about and asks how far China would go using weapons of economic coercion.

About the speaker

Richard McGregor is a journalist and author with long experience reporting on the top-level politics and economies of east Asia, primarily China and Japan. He was the Financial Times bureau chief in Beijing and Shanghai between 2000 and 2009, and headed the Washington office for four years from 2011. Prior to joining the FT, he was the chief political correspondent and China and Japan correspondent for The Australian. His books, The Party: The Secret World of China’s Communist Rulers, and Asia’s Reckoning: China, Japan, and the Fate of US Power in the Pacific Century, have won numerous awards. He was a fellow at the Wilson Centre in 2015 and a visiting scholar at the Sigur Centre at George Washington University in 2016. He is now at the Lowy Institute in Sydney.
