Tony Browne was New Zealand Ambassador to China from 2004 to 2009. He had previously been Director of the North Asia Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Director of the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office in Taipei. He became New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Vanuatu in 1987, and from 1990 to 1994 was Director of the Domestic and External Security Secretariat in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Prior to his retirement from the Foreign Ministry in 2011 he acted as Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He was appointed as Chair of the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre in 2011.
