Marsden Grant for Research on Rural China

Jason Young, a research fellow at the China Research Centre, has been awarded a $345,000 Marsden Fund grant for his project, Investing in Rural China: New Zealand Agribusiness and the Local Global Nexus - a study of New Zealand investment in rural China. Dr Young will make case studies of Fonterra's five-farm operation in Hebei province and a New Zealand demonstration farm in Guizhou. China recognises the need to modernise its farming methods to avoid being too reliant on outside food sources and now welcomes outside interests bringing modern technology. While China's agricultural sector is still based on small subsistence farms this is changing quickly. The project aims to get a better understanding of the challenges for agricultural development in China.
