Many hands make light work: restoring heritage types
Do you enjoy the meditative process of organising things? If so, Wai-te-ata Press runs weekly working bees to clean and organise heritage letterpress types.
About the Chinese heritage types
Wai-te-ata Press cares for New Zealand's only collection of Chinese-language metal letterpress type. We are now seeking volunteers to help restore this collection for future community use.
About the working bees
The weekly working bees are opportunities to take a break from busy digital lives, enjoy the tactility of type, and contribute towards the creation of a community-facing letterpress studio. Volunteers are welcome to drop-in for as long as they like, whether the full session or a few minutes.
Volunteers may help with the following tasks:
- cleaning pieces of type with a soft brush
- identifying pieces of type
- organising pieces of type into the correct type case compartments
- labelling type cases
- vacuuming type cases.
No previous experience necessary. Chinese linguistic ability would be bonus, but not necessary. Wai-te-ata Press staff will provide all tools, training, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Dates and times
2-4pm, every Wednesday afternoon from 24 January to 11 December 2024.
