Why study Landscape Architecture?

Professional accreditation

The University’s MLA is one of only three programmes in New Zealand that meets the standards for accreditation with the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA). After you graduate you’ll need to work as a landscape architect for around three years before you can become registered with the NZILA. Your qualification and registration will be recognised throughout New Zealand and internationally.

Through postgraduate study you’ll build valuable relationships and networks with peers, University staff, and future colleagues. Make the most of opportunities to attend events, seminars, workshops, and social functions.

Careers

You’ll graduate prepared to work as a landscape architect. You might start your own practice or work in a firm or government organisation. You’re likely to collaborate with artists, ecologists, architects, planners, and engineers to design a wide range of projects.

Other careers for graduates include parks and recreation planner, site designer and planner, or urban designer. You could also work as a civil designer, public infrastructure consultant, sustainable development consultant, or landscape assessor.

What do Landscape Architects do?

The Wellington School of Architecture has a number of prizes and scholarships available each year.

You can look for scholarships based on your level of study, subject area, and background.

Advance your expertise with PhD study

If you do well in your Master’s research, you’ll be able to apply to do a PhD. This is the highest academic qualification offered by the University and involves original and sustained research under supervision.

PhD students are supported by the Faculty of Graduate Research (FGR), which also handles all applications.

Before applying, you should talk to the Chair of the Wellington School of Architecture Research Committee about available supervision for PhD study in Landscape Architecture.
