Get involved with the UNI 101 programme when you start uni—connect with other new students, find your way around and get tips for study and student life.

Orientation doesn’t end when classes start, so the UNI101 programme runs during the first six weeks of the trimester as well as during New Students' Orientation week.

If you're a new undergraduate student you can enrol in UNI101 through Nuku, which is the learning portal for all your courses.  Once you're enrolled in the UNI101 course, you can sign up for sessions that interest you and join a UNI101 peer group.

UNI101 Sessions—building on Orientation

More study while you’re getting used to university might seem like a lot, but these sessions will help you thrive in your courses. Starting in your first week of trimester, you can sign up for sessions to cover off any info you may have missed at Orientation or refresh you on things you want to get more info about. There will be several sessions each week, so you’ll be able to find one that works with your schedule.

Week one—Technology Kickstart

This session provides a crash course on all the tech you need to become familiar with to do well at university. You’ll learn how to use the student portals, what to do when you have tech issues, and the technology resources available to you as a student.

Week two—Academic and assignment skills

Join learning advisers and librarians exploring academic skills, resources, and support available to help you succeed at university. By the end, you will understand the essential study skills for university, how to access academic resources, the importance of referencing and academic integrity, and where to get further help.

Week three—Supporting you to thrive

Student wellbeing facilitators in the Student Equity and Wellbeing team will give you an overview of their programmes and initiatives. By the end of this session, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the wellbeing resources the University has available to you for free!

Week four—RecreAction: Your guide to sports, fitness and wellbeing at university

In this session, you’ll discover how engaging with recreation can set you up for a year of health, happiness, and success. You’ll learn about the services and programmes that will help you make new friends, develop healthy habits, and stay involved in activities that bring you joy, with support and guidance from recreation staff and experienced students.

Week five—Kickstart Your Career Journey: Maximising University Career Services

Even though you are only just starting your degree, the Careers team have all kinds of resources to ensure your chosen degree aligns with your career aspirations, apply for jobs, internships, and graduate programmes. You will also learn how to access networking opportunities, explore leadership and mentorship programmes, and get an overview of the University’s online resources. Come along to this session and see how they can help you!

Week six—Services here to look out for you

This session will introduce you to advocacy and representative groups at the University, including class reps and how to get involved in student representation yourself! You’ll learn about Student Interest and Conflict Resolution (SICR), the Victoria University Student Association (VUWSA), and the services available to support you with challenging situations like tenancy issues, flatmate disagreements, how to handle conflict, and your rights as a member of our university whānau.
