Change of assessment time or place

In special circumstances you may be able to apply to sit your exam or complete an assessment task at a different time or a different location.

Many of the assessments for your courses, in particular exams and tests, occur at a scheduled time and place. If you have special personal circumstances that will prevent you from attending an exam, you can apply to sit it at a different time or place. For other types of assessment, you should talk to your course coordinator as soon as possible.

Exams

All students are expected to be present for their exams at the scheduled time and place. However, under exceptional circumstances you may apply to sit an exam or other centrally managed test at another location and/or at another time during the assessment period.

We consider the nature and seriousness of your special personal circumstances when assessing your application. For example:

  • We would be unlikely to consider an application based on a planned holiday.
  • We would be likely consider an application based on a planned operation or medical procedure.

The newly proposed time for the exam is normally within 24 hours of the scheduled time originally set for the exam, but other options may be considered depending on the circumstances.

How to apply

You should submit your application with supporting documentation no later than four weeks prior to the start of the assessment period.

Email the Examinations Management Team, exams@vuw.ac.nz, to request an application form.

An administrative fee will apply if you've been permitted to sit your assessment outside the scheduled time or at another location outside Wellington.

Aegrotat

In some cases you may not be able to sit your exam at all. In that case—assuming you were on track to pass your course—you can apply for an aegrotat pass.

Assessments other than exams

Your course may also include internal assessment tasks—such as assignments and in-class tests—that are to be completed at a specific time and place during the final assessment period.

If your special personal circumstances will affect your ability to complete these assessments at the scheduled time and place, you should contact your course coordinator to discuss your options.
