About assessments
For most courses, your grade will be awarded based on an externally managed final exam combined with internal assignments and tests during the trimester.
An assessment is when we assign marks or grades to pieces of work that you submit as part of your course. We assess your work to make a judgement about the extent to which you have achieved the learning objectives of the course and have met any standards that have been identified. An assessment is also a way to engage you in productive learning, to provide feedback to guide you, and to inform our teaching and learning decisions.
There are several types of assessments at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. Your course may be assessed internally, externally, or by a mixture of assessment types. The outline for your course includes information about the type(s) of assessments that are involved.
Internal assessments
Internal assessments are items of assessment that are not examinations as defined below. For example, internal assessments may include internal tests, assignments, class presentations, and practical work.
Your course coordinator is responsible for the nature and timing of internal assessments.
Exams and centrally managed tests
An exam or any other centrally managed test is an assessment that takes place at a predetermined time and place during an official assessment period after the end of teaching for the course, and is undertaken by all the students enrolled in the course.
The Examinations Management team arranges the scheduling, conduct, and invigilation (supervision) of exams and other centrally managed tests. They can be contacted by email, exams@vuw.ac.nz.
