The Wellington International Leadership Programme (WILP) is a free, self-paced, co-curricular programme aimed at enhancing any degree and making participants more globally aware.

This interdisciplinary programme advances each participant’s ability to critically engage with global issues, presenting creative, diverse, and innovative approaches to global citizenship while enhancing their intercultural competence, leadership potential, and employability. It also creates opportunities for international experiences and global connections.

Seminars are one of the three key components of WILP. Participants must attend a total of twelve seminars and submit reflective feedback on each, demonstrating their participation and personal views. The twelve seminars include four compulsory seminars and eight elective seminars.

The seminars are led by a variety of academics and professionals. Topics vary depending on their areas of interest, expertise and experience but should have some relevance for the programme’s intended graduate outcomes and often linked with the themes of global leadership, global connectedness, intercultural communication, internationalisation of higher education and sustainability.

Seminars are scheduled during teaching weeks in Trimesters 1 and 2, with most being held in person, and a few online. The compulsory seminars, which are available twice every trimester, are:

  • Global Leadership
  • Global Interdependence
  • Intercultural Communication
  • Aotearoa New Zealand in the World.

  • Politics and Performance: Deconstructing Identity and Political Representation
  • Taku Toa Takitini: Leadership in Te Ao Māori
  • Far Right and Anti-Racist Heathenry in the United Kingdom
  • What Makes a Sustainable University?
  • Simulated Track II Diplomacy (with the Asia New Zealand Foundation)
  • New Zealand-China Relations in an Age of Uncertainty
  • Volunteering for the SDGs: sharing skills in tropical places (with VSA & MFAT).
