Winter Energy Grant

Need help keeping your flat warm this winter? Student Finance is offering a winter energy grant to help pay a winter power bill.

Warm your whare—winter energy support

Gather your flatmates (if you live with other VUW students) and make a group application for financial assistance with a winter power bill. Don't worry if you don't live with other VUW students, all NZ-based VUW students are eligible to apply (so long as you aren't a resident in a Hall with all-inclusive costs).

Thanks to generous support from businesses who work with the University, alumni, and staff, via donations to the Student Hardship Fund, Student Finance is able to offer grants of up to $300 per household to help cover the increased costs of warming your home in the winter.

How to apply

  1. Complete our online application form (available here from 29 July).
  2. Email your supporting evidence to student-hardship@vuw.ac.nz.

One application per flat or household.

Applications will be open from 29 July–9 August 2024 and assessed weekly. Successful applicants will receive the grant the following week. A limited funding pool is available to support these grants, and Student Finance reserves the right to close applications prior to 9 August if the fund is exhausted. Alternatively, should additional funding be available, Student Finance reserves the right to extend the close date of the grant.

Supporting evidence

The following supporting evidence is required to complete the application:

  • A copy of your current or prior month's power bill or pre-paid electricity tokens.
  • A copy of your bank statement and bank account number. A flat account is preferred, but the address must match the application, name must match the application.

The address on the application must match both the address on the power bill and the nominated bank account.

The name of the main applicant must also be named on the bank account.

If you do not have a flat account, please state in the application how your household manages their bill payments, and provide an appropriate nominated account that has your flat address listed on it.

If you are unable to match your flat address across your supporting evidence, you can provide a current tenancy agreement with your name and flat address on it alongside your bank account.

Email supporting evidence to student-hardship@vuw.ac.nz.
