About
Kia ora!
I’m Jay, and I’m a Registered Social Worker in New Zealand. I identify as a white, queer, cis male (he/him). I was born in California, raised between Arkansas and various parts of Europe, and then moved to Texas as a young adult where I began my career in mental health. In 2023, I completed the final field placement for my Masters of Clinical Social Work here at Mauri Ora. I loved New Zealand so much that I stayed, and I loved the work and my colleagues here at Mauri Ora so much that I joined the team again as soon as I could.
I have experience providing behavioural therapy to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities; counselling, case management, crisis intervention, and psychosocial rehabilitation to adults diagnosed with severe mental illnesses, personality disorders, and substance use disorders; and care management and counselling to aging adults experiencing late-life decline. Among some other fun highlights, I’ve also been a group co-facilitator for LGBTQIA+ teens and a sexual and relational health educator for middle schoolers.
I care passionately about engaging difference and diversity in practice, especially across spectra of culture, disability, gender, sexuality, and life stage. My therapeutic approach is based on trauma-informed and person-centred care, heavily centres on mindfulness and attachment theory, and integrates elements from various modalities including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
In my spare time, I love growing plants, petting cats, planning my next D&D campaign, and playing far too many video games.
