Kia ora!

My name is Gemma and I was born and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau. I am bicultural—one side of my family is Fiji-born Chinese and the other is Pākehā, and I view my culture and collectivist upbringing as integral to my understanding of the world and my own place in it. I moved to Pōneke in 2022, intending to only stay for a few months, but I enjoyed it so much that I am still here!

I am training as a psychotherapist with the Wellington Transactional Analysis Training Institute. I was drawn to study Transactional Analysis because at its core is the belief that we are all basically “OK”—we are all capable of change, growth, and healthy relating. This aligns with my own personal philosophy and is how I intend to approach all my relationships, both therapeutic and personal. In my pre-psychotherapist-in-training life, I have done paid and volunteer mahi in social services, community services, and youth development. I am also a qualified engineer.

Outside of mahi, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, music, reading, running, and time out in the ngahere.

It is a privilege to journey with others, and a particular privilege to do so with the students here at Vic and alongside the Mauri Ora team.
