Accommodation
Will you choose on-campus housing, a homestay or to go flatting while on exchange? The choice is yours!
Organising accommodation is your responsibility and is never guaranteed.
Choosing Your Accommodation
Most universities have accommodation information on-line. In some cases, accommodation applications may be part of the host university application. You will be informed if this is the case by your host university.
Ask yourself these questions:
- What would better meet my needs - on- campus or off-campus accommodation?
- How would I get to university if I chose an off- campus option?
- What back up accommodation options are available to me if something goes wrong?
Accommodation needs to be applied for as early as possible. Start researching options now and note application opening and closing dates.
Read past Exchange Evaluations to learn from others’ experiences and check out ExchangeBuddy.com.
On-Campus Accommodation
On-campus housing is in high demand so be sure that you have a place allocated on campus before leaving New Zealand.
Some universities may offer early move-in so contact the Accommodation Office at your host university to see what arrangements can be made.
Off-Campus Accommodation
Ask the host university Accommodation Office if they can refer you to off-campus accommodation resources.
Search the internet for rental options before you depart (e.g., Facebook groups).
Seek local advice. If you plan to sign a rental contract, consider:
- Duration of lease
- Tenancy rights and responsibilities in your host country
- Don’t rush in and rent the first place you find.
- Consider the costs of filling an unfurnished apartment, is it worth it for just one semester?
