Available subjects
Starting part-time in Trimester 2 or 3
It may be possible to start the Bachelor of Commerce with Honours part-time in Trimester 2 or Trimester 3, depending on the availability of courses in the subject you’ve chosen. Email info@vuw.ac.nz to find out more.
Workload
You'll study seven courses, usually full time over two trimesters. You can expect a workload of 40–45 hours a week for much of the year.
Part-time students doing two courses per trimester will need to do around 20–23 hours of work a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working while studying.
You can estimate your workload by adding up the number of points you'll be doing. One point is roughly equal to 10–12 hours work.
How you'll study
Much of your time will be spent carrying out focused, self-directed study and guided individual research. Often there are fewer lectures than at undergraduate level and sometimes your classes will be student-run seminars.
Support
You'll have access to the Wellington School of Business and Government Honours Student study room set aside exclusively for postgraduate students. You can access these facilities from 7am to midnight. You'll find computing and printing facilities and specialist software including Gauss, Matlab, Mathematica, Maple, R, Shazam and Stata.
Staircasing options
At the end of your Honours pathway, you can apply to continue your studies to gain a Master of Commerce. Choosing this option means you do an additional term of supervised research for a further 60 points and obtain a Master's degree. If you have already graduated with an Honours degree and would like to obtain a Master’s degree, you have the option to transfer credits and do a 120 points thesis, which takes 12 months to complete.
