Ancient Greek & Latin
Learning the languages is an excellent way to appreciate how the Greeks and Romans perceived the world and communicated their values and ideas. From 2025, VUW students will be able to take Greek and Latin language courses through Otago University as part of their VUW BA. These courses will be credited towards their VUW qualification, including their VUW Classics major. VUW students in these classes will receive in-person tutorial support from VUW Classics staff. If you are interested in studying Greek or Latin, let us know by filling out this form, and we'll make sure you are informed and supported through the enrolment process.
Otago’s Language Classes by Distance webpage contains the current list of courses offered through Otago (“papers now offered online”), links to more detailed information about those classes, and instructions on how to enrol in those classes.
For questions about the ancient languages please contact the Programme Director of Classics, Dr Hamish Cameron (hamish.r.cameron@vuw.ac.nz) or the school (slc@vuw.ac.nz). For questions about the Otago courses specifically, please contact the Otago Classics Department (classics@otago.ac.nz) or Associate Professor Gwynaeth McIntyre (gwynaeth.mcintyre@otago.ac.nz).
Trimester 1 Courses
GREK 111 and LATN 111 are for beginners in Ancient Greek and Latin and are offered in Semester 1. These papers are designed to be taken entirely online. There is only 1 hour per week scheduled for workshopping sentences with other students and the instructor (via Zoom). The rest of the materials (videos, worksheets, readings, etc.) are structured so that students can work through the material at their own pace during the week.
In addition to support from Otago staff, VUW students in these classes will also have 1 hour per week of additional office hour/tutorial support from VUW staff.
Trimester 2 Courses
GREK 112 and LATN 112 (offered in Semester 2) build on the skills developed in semester 1. They follow the same format as GREK 111 and LATN 111.
In addition to support from Otago staff, VUW students in these classes will also have 1 hour per week of additional office hour/tutorial support from VUW staff.
