The projects are spearheaded by the Digital Inclusion Alliance Aotearoa (DIAA) in collaboration with public libraries and local communities nationwide.

The meet-up featured talks from speakers involved in a variety of digital inclusion projects. Cathy Hardinge, founder and chief executive of Digital Seniors, discussed her work bringing communities together to help seniors use technology. Her talk included insights into common attitudes and perceptions, and how these need to shift to be more inclusive.

Annette Beattie spoke about her time as manager of digital strategies for Hutt City Council, where she led the development of several initiatives to develop the community’s skills and confidence with digital technology. This included the ‘Stepping UP’ digital literacy programme, which was initiated by Hutt City Council and is now offered in over 50 local authorities.

Paul Greville, digital services librarian at Masterton Library discussed the Spark Jump service, which provides broadband to families with children under 18 without internet access. The service has connected over 150 families in Masterton since starting in September 2017.

Masterton Library and Paul Greville have been recognised for their leadership role in offering digital programmes to the community and for demonstrating a special ability to connect families who are digitally excluded.

Following the presentations, attendees had the opportunity to tour DORA, a mobile digital learning centre. DORA is used to improve digital inclusivity, and support ‘Stepping UP’ classes.
