Claudia Puti Holmstead-Morris
Meet Claudia, one of our Master of Fine Arts (Creative Practice) Film graduates who found a job in film through her studies.
Why did you choose to study at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington?
Claudia: Enrolling as a graduate student at Te Herenga Waka gave me the confidence to be an independent learner. I was able to explore and research the topics I was most interested in.
Why did you choose to study film?
Claudia: I’ve always had a big interest and appreciation for films and storytelling from a young age. That curiosity has never faded, and I’m very lucky and happy to work in the film industry today.
What was the most important thing you gained in your film studies at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington?
Claudia: One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to go with the flow and remind myself that perfection isn’t necessary. Every project I’ve worked on helps me to refine my craft and broaden my skills, and I learn something new every time.
What motivated you in your studies?
Claudia: The support from friends, whānau, and staff at Te Herenga Waka was incredibly encouraging. It really is a film community in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, especially down Fairlie Terrace [where the programme is located].
Why did you choose to study in Wellington?
Claudia: Te Whanganui-a-Tara, being the film capital of Aotearoa, seemed the most appropriate place to pursue my studies. I knew connections at Wingnut Films, Wētā, or Park Road Post could be just an email away. The amazing film community in the city and Aotearoa is unmatched. Also, it’s my hometown, so I’m a bit biased.
How have you used the skills and/or knowledge you gained in film?
Claudia: I currently work as an Assistant Sound Editor at Wingnut Films, where I gained an internship during my Master of Fine Arts. I use skills I learned during my degrees every day.
Did you form valuable relationships in your film studies?
Claudia: I made connections with so many amazing people at Te Herenga Waka and in the Aotearoa film industry during my studies. Some of whom have become incredible colleagues and best friends.
