Exploring the intersection of cinema and culture

I studied film because I was curious about the connection between cinema and culture: how do films reinforce or interrogate politics, history, and social norms? Does editing archival footage reveal or reinvent the past?

Studying in Wellington meant I had close access to the Ngā Taonga audiovisual archive and I used archival sources a lot in my study. Wellington is also the hub of the New Zealand International Film Festival where I saw unique films that inspired my research.

Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s film staff were incredibly supportive. They mentored me through development opportunities like summer research projects, writing journal articles and video essays, and teaching. I now work as a film archivist in London using the knowledge and skills I learned at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington daily!
