In 2013, Rhian Salmon and Rebecca Priestley introduced a minor in Science in Context (now Science in Society) with five undergraduate courses. In 2018, the Centre for Science in Society was launched. The School of Science in Society—formed in 2023—now also has a science communication undergraduate major and minor, a Master of Science in Society (MScSoc), and MSc and PhD research students working on a range of projects in public engagement with science, environmental humanities, science and technology studies, the history of science, creative science writing and more.
Academics within the School also carry out world-leading research across a range of related disciplines and have been successful in attracting funding from National Science Challenges, Centres of Research Excellence and Royal Society Te Apārangi grants, including the Marsden and Endeavour Funds.
