Transparency International NZ Dame Suzanne Snively Scholarship

History and purpose

Transparency New Zealand have established this scholarship in the name of their former Chair of their Board, Dame Suzanne Snively, to support a student undertaking research related to transparency integrity, accountability or anti-corruption in relation to governance.

The scholarship is intended to support a female student undertaking an Honours or Masters by Thesis degree.

Who is eligible?

• Applicants must be female students undertaking an Honours or Masters by Thesis degree at Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington.

Selection criteria

• Applicants must be enrolled in an Honours or Masters by Thesis degree at Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington.
• Applicants' thesis must have a focus on transparency or anti-corruption in regard to governance, regulatory practices or laws, ethical leadership or ethical culture.
• Applicants must be female.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation

• A personal statement that gives an overview of your thesis topic.
• A copy of your academic transcript.

Selection process

Applicants will be assessed on the basis of the strength of their proposed thesis and their academic achievement.  Applicants may also be invited to an interview as part of the selection process.

The successful recipient will be selected by the Brian Picot Chair in Ethical Leadership, in consultation with relevant academic staff from Wellington School of Business and Government, or the Faculty of Law and, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science (as appropriate) in conjunction with the donor.

Additional information

Recipients are expected to submit a letter of thanks for the donor within one month of receiving the scholarship.

Recipients may be asked for example to participate in a TINZ Webinar and/or board meeting at Transparency NZ to present their thesis findings, and to write an article for the TINZ newsletter.  It is understood that the findings may be used in Transparency NZ's publications.

Regulations and conditions

2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
