Meredith Lucy Bower Memorial Scholarship
History and purpose
This scholarship has been established to honour Meredith Lucy Bower and recognise her great love of, and contributions to, English literature and poetry. Meredith attended university at Princeton where she graduated Summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. Meredith was known for her empathy, courage, compassion and ability to inspire others to do amazing things.
Who is eligible?
- This scholarship is open to full-time undergraduate students studying English Literature at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must be intending to enrol in their second, third or Honours year of an undergraduate degree at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
Selection criteria

- Selection will be based on the academic merit of the applicant as well as the quality of their submitted essays.
Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
- Two essays on poetry written as part of the course requirements for any courses in English literature at Victoria University of Wellington
Selection process
The applicants will be shortlisted by members of academic staff (usually Programme Director of English (or their nominee) in consultation with the Head of School of English, Film, Theatre and Media Studies and other appropriate staff). The donor will then be sent the shortlisted applicants for review, before a final decision is made. Should there be difficulty in deciding on the recipient, applicants may be invited to an interview.
Additional information
Recipients must write a letter of thanks to the donor within one month of receiving the scholarship. The successful recipient is also required to write a poem on the theme of hope, to be shared with the donor before the end of the scholarship tenure.
Regulations and conditions

- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
