HOPE Foundation Scholarship for Research on Ageing
History and purpose
The HOPE Foundation for Research on Ageing is a non-Government – funded Charitable Trust established in 1996, to prepare New Zealand for an ageing future. The mission of the Foundation is to:
- Lead and resource the funding of people conducting research on ageing.
- Disseminate research-based information about the effects of ageing on individuals and society.
- Increase the pool of researchers in New Zealand.
- Influence decision-makers to improve the quality of life for ageing New Zealanders.
These scholarships, established in 2003 as The HOPE Foundation Scholarships, are intended to support University students in the early stages of their careers, conducting research into ageing. the HOPE Foundation for Research on Ageing wants to encourage research into ageing phenomena, because they believe that as the nation ages, many issues will arise that will have to be addressed in order to assist New Zealand Society to cope with the effects of our ageing population. In this way, the Foundation seeks to help prepare New Zealand for an ageing future.
Who is eligible?
- Applicants must be enrolled or intending to enrol full-time or part-time in a Masters (by thesis) or Doctoral study at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants' research must be in a topic related to ageing.
- the HOPE Foundation for Research on Ageing Scholarship are tenable by students who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand. There is discretion to also consider applications from international students of merit, who are doing postgraduate research study at a New Zealand University.
Selection criteria
Applications will be accepted from a wide range of disciplines in line with the Foundation’s philosophy of encouraging eclectic research into ageing and its effects on individuals and society.
The basis of selection will be:
- The quality of the research proposal
- The relevance of the research to the ageing population and the HOPE Foundation for Research on Ageing’s objectives
- The academic merit of the applicant as measured by the grade point average assessed over the applicant’s two most recent years of equivalent full-time study
- The Selection Committee is not obligated to make an award in any year if it determines that there are no applications of sufficient merit
Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
- A brief two-page outline of the proposed research
- A CV (please include a list of your published research on ageing, if applicable).
- Evidence that ethical approval for the proposed research has been applied for or approved
- Recipients will be asked to provide a current photograph for publicity purposes
Selection process
The scholarship shall be awarded by the HOPE Foundation for Research on Ageing Selection Committee.
Additional information
One or more scholarships of $6,000 will be awarded annually. The scholarship will be paid in two equal instalments at the beginning of Trimester 1 and again in Trimester 2, on confirmation of enrolment.
Regulations and conditions
- Scholarship recipients may hold other awards at the same time as the HOPE Foundation Scholarship for Research on Ageing.
- Recipients will be expected to acknowledge the HOPE Foundation for Research on Ageing’s support in any publication, monograph, report or presentation that results from the research.
- Recipients will be expected to report progress to the Foundation at the end of each year and to provide a final report on the completed research.
- The Foundation will not restrict the publication of research results by the recipient of a scholarship or his/her research team. However, from time to time, in order to enhance their own public profiles as research-supporting entities, the Foundation will, through the Foundation, seek to negotiate with research teams the publication of reports on research progress and/or outcomes in some agreed form on their web sites and in printed communications.
- The Scholarships Committee, in consultation with the Foundation has the power to terminate or suspend a Scholarship, if it receives an unsatisfactory report on the progress of a Scholar from the Head of the Academic Unit in which the recipient is enrolled.
