History and purpose

This scholarship was established in recognition of the long-standing professional relationship between Professor Tony Angelo, of the Victoria University of Wellington Law Faculty, and the countries of the South Pacific. In particular, the scholarship recognises his close involvement with the development of academic legal studies at the University of the South Pacific and the long-standing commitment of the Victoria University of Wellington Law Faculty to the South Pacific.

Who is eligible?

  • This scholarship is open to Law graduates from the Pacific Islands with a first-class academic record, who plan to undertake, or are currently undertaking, a Master's degree at the Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington Law Faculty (either by thesis or by course work), or a Postgraduate Diploma.
  • Applicants should be planning on a legal career in academic service, or in government or community service.
  • Priority will be given to applicants living in the Pacific Islands but Pasifika students resident in New Zealand may also be considered.
  • The scholarship may also be awarded to third or fourth-year students of Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington Law Faculty who wish to enrol for a trimester at the Law Faculty of the University of the South Pacific.

  • Applicants must be Law graduates from the Pacific Islands with a first-class academic record, who plan to undertake, or are currently undertaking, a Master's degree at Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington Law Faculty (either by thesis or by course work), or a Postgraduate Diploma.
  • Applicants should be planning on a legal career in academic service, or in government or community service.
  • For applicants who wish to enrol for a trimester at the Law Faculty of the University of the South Pacific, they must be in their third or fourth year studies at Victoria University of Wellington Law Faculty.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Selection process

The successful recipient will be selected by a panel of appropriate staff from the Faculty of Law, Victoria University of Wellington.

Recipients must write a letter of thanks to the donor of this scholarship.

The scholarship covers one return economy class airfare and fees (whether at international or domestic level) for the LLM or Postgraduate Diploma.

For the Victoria University of Wellington third or fourth-year student intending to undertake one trimester at the University of the South Pacific, the value of the scholarship is one return economy airfare to Wellington.

Regulations and conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
