History or background of award
An award known as the Te Taonga Whakamaumaharatanga ki a Ruka Te Rangiāhuta Broughton (The Ruka Te Rangiāhuta Broughton Memorial Award) was established in 1987 as a memorial to the late Ruka Broughton, Lecturer in Maori Studies who died 17 April 1986.
Selection criteria
Candidates for the award must have majored in Maori Studies or are currently taking MAOR 311 and MAOR 313.
Number of awards offered
Usually one, but in exceptional cases two awards may be presented in any one year.
Value
The award will be a taonga which is clearly Māori in appearance and which is excellent in quality.
Closing dates for applications
No application required. However, recommendations can be made in writing by either staff or senior students in Māori Studies, and submitted to the Tumuaki, Te Kawa a Maui.
Decision makers
The final selection will be made by the Te Herenga Waka Marae Committee.
Additional information
The presentation of the award will be made at Te Tumu Herenga Waka during the December Te Hui Whakapūmau graduation celebration.

Eligibility
This award was established in 1987 as a memorial to the late Ruka Broughton, Lecturer in Maori Studies, who died 17 April 1986. The object of the award is to recognise and encourage students to pursue with excellence and determination, proficiency in the skills of Maoritanga, such as whaikorero (oratory), waiata (traditional music), waiata-a-ringa (action songs), karanga (ceremonial call), and te reo (speaking the language). Candidates for the award must have majored in Māori Studies or are currently taking MAOR 311 and MAOR 313.
