Alex Scobie Research Prize

Information

This prize was established via the Victoria University Foundation in memory of Alex Scobie, Reader in Classics, in the Classics Department at Victoria University of Wellington (1963-1989). The prize was set up by his family, friends, and former students.

The prize shall be awarded annually to the student in Classical Studies, Greek, or Latin who, on the recommendation of the Head of School and the Director of Classics, shall be judged to have completed the best research paper at Honours level, or the best thesis at Masters and PhD level.

A candidate may be awarded the prize more than once, but only on a second or subsequent occasion when, in the judgement of the Head of School and the Director of Classics, that candidate's piece of research writing is overwhelmingly superior to that of any other candidate in that particular year.

The value of the prize in any year shall be as determined by the Victoria University Foundation after consideration of the income from the fund. No award shall be made in any year in which the Head of School and the Director of Classics considers there is no candidate of sufficient merit. If in any year the prize is not awarded, the funds may be used in a subsequent year or added to the capital funds.

The recipient will be asked to write a letter of appreciation which will be forwarded appropriately.
