Paihau-Robinson Research Institute's deputy director, Professor Rod Badcock, nominated for prestigious KiwiNet Award
The KiwiNet Awards are the biggest national event for the research commercialisation sector in Aotearoa New Zealand, bringing the community together to connect, showcase successes, and inspire others.
The nomination is a testament to Professor Badcock's leadership and the Institute's commitment to pushing the boundaries of what's possible with superconductivity, says Rod’s colleague, Dr Nick Long, Director of the Paihau—Robinson Research Institute.
“It's not often you find someone who embodies the spirit of an engineer, the curiosity of a scientist, and the vision of a businessman. That's Rod—a truly rare achiever.
“With this unique blend, he's leading innovation on a global scale with his committed local team of talents and a vast network of international partners from business, governments, and academia."
"I am humbled by the nomination," said Professor Badcock, a pioneer in the field of applied superconductivity. His groundbreaking work focuses on decarbonising transport sectors, including aviation, which he estimates to be a $5 trillion industry.
The Paihau—Robinson Research Institute is already making waves with its high-speed generator/motor powered by a supremely reliable HTS (High-Temperature Superconductor) motor, boasting a world record of 18,000 RPM superconducting motors.
"Our work will help to build a more sustainable transportation system with no emissions and better efficiencies and quality," added Professor Badcock.
“We work with large global partners—from NASA to large corporates—empowering them to reduce emissions, significantly increasing their capacity, and futureproofing their businesses.
“We might say that everything is moving towards electrifying, and we are at the leading edge in this.
“The sky is not the limit but a beginning for us”.
Professor Badcock is well-known among scientists, entrepreneurs and governments. His laser-sharp focus on the highest quality possible, with uncompromising ingenuity, has attracted students from far and wide to work with him at the Paihau—Robinson Research Institute.
Many alumni have become trailblazing entrepreneurs, and include Dr Ratu Mataira, the founder and the CEO of OpenStar Technologies.
Ratu summarised his experience with Dr. Badcock, who supervised his doctoral thesis: “Rod takes you on a journey where he guides you to understand how to apply everything in real-world problems and solve them without compromise. Because he has been an entrepreneur, he knows how to set up and grow a company. His advice was the highlight of my doctoral studies”.
Professor Badcock attributes the institute's success to a unique approach of instilling three principles in our students and staff.
“The first is to work with the best, the second to collaborate with the industry and other research institutes, and the third to protect your IP thoroughly and publish immediately to let others in the business know what you have achieved."
The KiwiNet Research Commercialisation Awards winners will be announced on 28 September 2023.
