Research ethics

Victoria University of Wellington is committed to meeting the highest ethical standards for all research that involves animal or human participants.

Victoria University of Wellington undertakes a wide range of research and consultancy work. This includes research with human participants in the form of interviews, ethnographic and participatory research, surveys, questionnaires and experiments, through to research with human-derived tissue and animals.

The University’s Research Office provides support to researchers in all schools and faculties to ensure they meet the highest scientific and ethical standards. Researchers are bound by University policies and statutes, and regulatory codes under New Zealand law.

Research and human ethics

Our researchers work with the Human Ethics Committee to ensure they follow responsible and robust processes when conducting any research involving people, their data, or tissue. The University promotes a collaborative approach to understanding and developing best practice in research ethics.

Research and animal ethics

Victoria University of Wellington is committed to a responsible approach to research practices and operates under the University’s Code of Ethical Conduct for the use of Live Animals for Teaching and Research.

As part of this code, the University has an Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) with a membership approved by the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Any research involving animals at the University, or in other institutions operating under our code, must be approved and monitored by the committee.
