Reimagining public value
The Policy Hub collaborated with the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment (MBIE) to run a series of five workshops in 2023.
At these workshops senior public servants and academics shared their perspectives on how the public service could design policy options to maximise public value.
Participants considered how New Zealand should best respond to the challenges emerging from the ‘polycrisis’—the interrelated challenges of climate change, an ageing population, and the emergence of new technology.
The series addressed the following questions:
- How do we balance different interests, including our interests today and the interests of future generations?
- What systems do we need to hold publicly funded organisations to account to deliver value?
- What different policy tools do we need to deliver value in the context of these challenges?

Responding to the ‘polycrisis’
In close cooperation the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Adviser, we ran a series of talks and networking opportunities based on the topic of the ‘polycrisis’—a term that describes the interplay between multiple crises happening at a global level.
At each event, we heard talks delivered by speakers representing one science discipline. Following the talks, attendees had the opportunity to build networks between the policy community and the science community.
New Zealand Election Study (2020)
During the 2020 general election campaign, the New Zealand Social Media Study harvested more than 3,000 Facebook posts from political parties and their leaders.
Researchers Dr Mona Krewel and Professor Jack Vowles investigated the ways that politicians used social media to target, inform, interact with, mobilise, and pursue voters in this election.
