Research themes
At the core of the project is research on themes of Equity, Belonging, and Authority.
This model helps us to seriously address the issues of inequity, and the barriers to Pacific people succeeding in law school and then taking up a career in the legal profession.
Addressing these issues through the law is essential to ensuring a just, inclusive, tolerant, and free society for all New Zealanders.
Equity
“Equity is about ensuring a level playing field so that we all have the opportunity to thrive.”
—Tupe Solomon-Tanoa’i
Belonging
“Belonging means feeling at home in all the places where law is spoken and used - whether in the classroom, in the courtroom, or in the boardroom."
—Associate Professor Guy Fiti Sinclair
Authority
“Authority to me is about Pasifika being part of the decision making process for their future in New Zealand. It is about true equitable access to engage and be heard within how New Zealand is run.
Authority is also about the power of law to create change. Laws are tool that have been used to oppress Pasifika but they can also be a tool to strengthen and remove prejudice for Pasifika communities in New Zealand.”
—Williame Gucake
