BIO
Mohammad H. Zareei is an electronic musician, sound artist, and researcher, based in Wellington, New Zealand. Using custom-built software and hardware, his experiments with sound cover a wide range from electronic compositions to kinetic sound-sculptures and audiovisual installations. Regardless of the medium, Zareei’s work aims to highlight the beauty in the basics of sound and light production and reductionist audiovisual elements that draw inspiration from physical and architectural principles. He has presented his work at international venues and festivals such as Ωhm Festival (Brisbane), SETxCTM Festival (Tehran), New Zealand Festival (Wellington), International Symposium on Electronic Art (Brisbane, Montreal, Vancouver, and Dubai), Modern Body Festival (The Hague), New Interfaces for Musical Expression (London), and International Conference on Auditory Display (New York), to name a few. His work Rasping Music was the winner of 1st prize for Sound Art in the last iteration of the international Sonic Arts Award in 2015 (Italy), and his installation Material Sequencer was shortlisted for Aesthetica Art Prize 2023 (UK).
Over the course of his PhD, he developed a portfolio of works focused on the intersections of sound art and Brutalism. Described as “Re-defin[ing] the Meaning of Industrial Music” on Fast Company, his Brutalist Noise Ensemble has been featured on journal publications such as Organised Sound and Leonardo Music Journal, as well as online platforms such as Creative Applications and Streaming Museum.
Zareei publishes his electronic music compositions under the moniker mHz. He has released his electronic music work on Room 40 (AU), LINE imprint (US), Important Records (US), leerraum (Switzerland), and Kasuga Records (Germany).
He holds a B.S. in Physics from Shahid University of Tehran and a B.F.A in Music Technology from California Institute of the Arts. He recently completed his Ph.D at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, where he currently works as a Lecturer in Sonic Arts.
