Tautai 2025—A Pasifika academic preparation programme

A new pre-orientation programme to welcome Pasifika students into University life kicks off on Monday 10 February.

A large group of people wearing matching black t-shirts with the word Pasifika on them are sitting on the ground on a sunny day.

Tautai is an academically focused programme with the aim to ensure first-year students—whether school leavers or those new to the University—get the best preparation for their studies.

Running Monday 10 to Thursday 13 February, Tautai has mock lectures and mock tutorials as well as workshops. One of the unique things about it, is that it is open for parents to come and experience what it will be like for their student, to attend Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

Tautai is a Tuvaluan word for ‘navigator’ or ‘journey,’ and reflects the rich tradition of oceanic navigation in Pasifika cultures. Just as Pacific ancestors once sailed vast oceans, relying on skills such as reading the stars, the currents, and the winds, this programme is designed to equip new undergraduate Pasifika tauira with the study skills and knowledge to help them navigate their academic journey.

This programme will also have the opportunity for first-year students to meet their Pasifika advisers and faculty advisers, and ask plenty of questions.
