When Catherine saw that Singapore was one of the eligible countries for recipients of a PM’s Scholarship, she decided to apply.

“I knew Singapore offered a lot of new experiences that I hadn’t tried before, and I wanted to expand my knowledge base. Honestly, it just looked really cool. There were so many things to do and people to meet, and I was immersed in a completely different culture.”

During the exchange, she continued her study interests in Chinese, astrophysics, experimental physics, jazz studies, and music performance.

Music performance is one of Catherine’s passions, and she often performs her own original songs. In Singapore, she had the opportunity to perform at campus open mic nights.

“It was really fun, and connecting with the musicians who organised the event was great. Hearing about their experiences as musicians in Singapore was super interesting.”

A significant aspect of the scholarship is immersing oneself in a new culture, and Catherine fully embraced this opportunity. She enjoyed exploring the sights, indulging in Asian cuisine, and experiencing the spectacular festivities of Chinese New Year, which is celebrated with great extravagance in Singapore.

Studying both science and music, Catherine acknowledges that her choice is an “interesting combination,” but she believes she couldn’t study one without the other.

“I love physics, I love music; I couldn’t choose. They are complementary, but my favourite parts about each of the majors have nothing to do with each other. There are instances, especially in music technology, where my background in physics really helps.”

Initially, she tried combining a Bachelor of Science with music as second major, but it wasn’t enough, “I realised making music is what I love, and Victoria University was best placed to allow me to focus on two areas.

“We have the School of Music here, and I had seen the Physics labs and heard about the various research happening. Plus, I just love Wellington.”
