New Zealand’s vibrant yet often overlooked history in comics and cartooning includes a thriving contemporary scene spanning from zines and comic strips to webcomics and graphic novels. As the field of comics studies grows globally, these events in Wellington play a crucial role in integrating New Zealand into this growth.

The symposium, hosted by the University’s Te Kura Hoahoa—School of Design Innovation will commence with a keynote from Dr Zak Waipara, an experienced cartoonist and design academic. His address will provide a grounding in tikanga Māori/New Zealand perspectives.

Additionally, the event will feature panel discussions with leading international comics scholars and educators, exploring the state of the field internationally. There will also be discussions with local educators about teaching and studying comics in New Zealand. This will be followed by an open dialogue looking towards the future.

Senior lecturer Dylan Horrocks says the event is aimed at opening discussion on the future of comics studies in New Zealand.

“New Zealand is about 10-15 years behind where the field is internationally—they’re well-organised with journals, conferences, and associations. By involving these international experts in our discussions, we aim to draw from their experience and insights, inspiring others to do the same here.

“We are in need of an ongoing network of people who are engaged and can keep tabs on what is happening both locally and abroad; from that, things can grow.”

Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Design Innovation has experienced a notable surge in interest in comics studies. According to Mr Horrocks, the school now offers comics and graphic narrative courses for students all levels, alongside supporting successful individual postgraduate endeavours.

The free event welcomes attendees from diverse backgrounds and levels of design and comics education, including those with varying degrees of interest. With a focus on establishing a New Zealand comics studies association, it will provide valuable resources and information for educators and students alike.

Other events on the weekend include the Comics Zine Market and ComicFest.
