I would like to acknowledge the effects of the volcanic eruption and tsunami that hit Tonga on Saturday 15 January. The university community sits alongside you in mourning the loss of life, and the significant loss of livelihood caused by these natural disasters.
We know that staff and students with family and friends in Tonga are struggling, especially with the difficulties communicating with your loved ones. Our thoughts are with you, and we hope you are able to connect with your whānau soon.
We are here to provide support. Staff members—please discuss what you need with your manager. EAP services and counsellors are also available through this link if you need them.
For students, the office of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifika) and our student service teams are here to support you. Please get in touch if you would like to talk to someone or need additional support.
Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban, our Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifika) and her team are in communication with Tongan community leaders and the Tongan Council about the disaster, and will keep us informed about support that will be required in coming weeks.
Tēnei te tuku whakaaro aroha ki a koutou ngā whānau o Tonga i tēnei wā.
