Elizabeth began her involvement with the University as a student, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and French in 1951, and a Master’s in English in 1954. She then worked as a junior lecturer and tutor in the English Department. She became a member of the University Council in 1986, served as Pro-Chancellor in 1990, and as the University’s Chancellor from 1991 to 1995. Elizabeth was awarded an honorary Doctor of Literature by the University Council in 1997.
Elizabeth had a particular interest in equal opportunity issues, especially relating to women in the workplace, and made a significant, ongoing contribution to the campaign for pay equity for women in New Zealand. She became a member of the National Advisory Council for the Employment of Women (NACEW) in 1967, and served as chair of NACEW between 1971 and 1979. She also served as the executive secretary of the Association of University Teachers from 1967–1980.
Elizabeth was the author of a number of books. Her most recent book was a memoir, Pay Packets & Stone Walls: A memoir of women's causes and love of the land, which provided a personal take on many significant issues, including her ongoing campaign for equal pay.
Elizabeth was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1997 for services to education and the community. She was a member of the Hunter Club and Victoria Legacy Club. Her passing will be recorded and acknowledged at the 10 May meeting of the University Council.
A funeral service will be held for Elizabeth at Old St Paul's, Mulgrave St, at 1 pm on Friday 30 April.
