The twenty-first century has been recognised as the Asian Century, with China positioned as the region’s economic powerhouse and anchor. But as we move into a new decade, small and middle sized Asian nations are growing rapidly and emerging as new centres of power. The geopolitical shifts continuing in the region bring both challenges and opportunities.
The summit will be held over two days at the University, and will bring together university leaders, academics and policy-makers from New Zealand and around the world to discuss changing dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region.
Staff are welcome to attend and hear insights from leading academics, including a keynote debate on ‘Power Shifts in Asia and the Future of Regional Order’ with panellists Professor Rosemary Foot (University of Oxford), Professor Khong Yuen Foong (National University of Singapore), and Professor Xiaoming Huang (Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington).
Speakers and presenters at the summit will seek to address many of the issues facing the region including growing tensions between super powers; how multilateral relationships are changing and new alliances developing; how small nations can maintain their influence and independence; and how the shifting balance of power may affect policy-making in areas such as migration, climate change and people-trafficking.
