Victoria appoints senior academic to lead learning and equity

Victoria University of Wellington has appointed Professor Linda Trenberth to the role of Vice-Provost (Academic and Equity).

Professor Trenberth is currently Dean (Academic) and Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Business School at Griffith University in South East Queensland. Griffith is ranked in the world’s top 100 universities in 11 subject areas and is regarded as one of Australia’s most comprehensive research and teaching universities.

In her role at Griffith Business School, which she took up in 2014, Professor Trenberth provides leadership and support for learning, teaching, student experience and equity matters.

Prior to joining Griffith University, she was Deputy Dean of the School of Business, Birkbeck, at the University of London, where she had a strong focus on student engagement and satisfaction and was a leader in facilitating the effective use of digital technologies driven by learning approaches.

Victoria University’s Provost Professor Wendy Larner says Professor Trenberth will make an important contribution in an area of critical importance to Victoria.

“We are delighted to have someone of Professor Trenberth’s calibre joining Victoria’s Senior Leadership Team and leading a programme of work to achieve the University’s ambitious goals in learning, teaching and equity matters.

“Professor Trenberth has the skills to advance our learning and teaching profile and academic policy and strategy. She also brings a deep awareness of the need for universities to build an inclusive and accessible environment and of Victoria’s commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi.”

Professor Trenberth is both an alumna and former staff member of Victoria—she completed her Master of Arts in Recreation and Leisure Studies at Victoria in 1990 and then spent two years as a lecturer on the University’s Recreation and Leisure Studies Master’s Programme. Prior to her time at Victoria she completed a Bachelor of Education at Massey University and teacher training at Christchurch Teacher’s College. In 1997, she gained her PhD in Human Resource Management from Massey.

Professor Trenberth says she is pleased and honoured to have been given the opportunity to work with senior leaders other staff and students at Victoria and contribute towards the University realising its vision of being a leading capital city university and one of the great global civic universities.

“One of the areas I will be prioritising is Victoria’s commitment to giving all its students a civic engagement experience, which is an exciting and visionary idea. I will also be focused on ensuring our curriculum is equipping our students with the skills and attributes needed to meet the challenges of new technologies and global trends."

Professor Trenberth will take up her new position on Monday 3 July.
