Victoria’s School of Architecture celebrates 40 years

A month-long public exhibition is being held to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Architecture.

Victoria's Faculty of Architecture and Design campus.

The exhibition, held at the University’s campus in Te Aro, captures moments from the School’s rich history and presents them as a story covering the past 40 years.

The School of Architecture was formally established in 1975, with the first class of students entering in March 1976. The School started with a student roll of just 25—today there are over 1,000.

Professor Joanna Merwood-Salisbury, current Head of the School, says the exhibition is a great opportunity for the public to see the work staff and students have worked on over the years.

"The exhibition illustrates the impact students and staff at the School of Architecture have had on Wellington since 1975. Many of the ideas tested in the School, from inner city apartment living to the development of the waterfront for public use, have now been realised.”

The exhibition will include a range of large scale photographs that highlight the people of the School and their innovative, hands-on and often very quirky actions.

You can see the exhibition from 18 March to 16 April (weekdays 9am–5pm) in the Atrium at Victoria's Te Aro campus, 139 Vivian Street.

Alumni of the School and the general public are also invited to attend a number of events from 18–19 March, including an academic symposium and day of celebration which will reflect on architecture of the past, and look to what might happen in the future.
